Roosevelt Elementary School has had a legacy in our community for almost 120 years. Roosevelt has had 2 names and 3 buildings during its long history, and the learning continues today.
In 1903, our original school--a classic, two story brick building--was built on the corner of 16th Avenue and Summitview Avenue, and it was named Summit View School. In 1921, our school board changed the name of Summitview School to Roosevelt to honor Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States, after a visit to our city. A new building was constructed in 1937 next to the original building. The addition included a cafeteria, additional classrooms, and a gymnasium.
Then, our original building and the addition were both demolished in 1954 to make way for a new building.
This second building was then demolished in 1991 to make way for the current building, which opened later in 1991.
School historians have preserved a pictorial history of Roosevelt. There are vintage photographs displayed in the hallway near the office that depict the evolution of our school building from 1903 to the present.
